As I was reading Newsweek and enjoying my breakfast of ‘Chicken Fried Rice’ (seriously) I ran across an article entitled, ‘Lo Mein Street, U.S.A.‘. The heading said, ‘Americans love Chinese food. The problem is, most of what we’re eating doesn’t really come from China.’ Examples were listed:
- ‘Chop Suey is an American creation.
- Fortune cookies were invented in Japan
The ‘Books’ article took a look at the book written by Jennifer 8 Lee called, ‘The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the the World of Chinese Food’.
I am admittedly (or better yet boastfully) a Chinese food addict. I could eat it EVERY meal. Just can’t get enough. I have wondered about the healthiness of some of it but have chomped on! Also, I’ve observed that oftentimes the restaurant employees were eating a different ’style’ than I - why was their rice white and mine brown? I like white rice but I adore fried rice!
Much of the article was about the growth of Chinese restaurants in America. Yeah! I need to try them all!
Check out the article next time you eat leftover take out for breakfast!
