When we were in Washington, D.C. recently we spent about three hours in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It was fascinating to say the least. It was particularly interesting to me to see the emphasis on books in the museum and the importance of books in the Holocaust.
If you go to the site and do a search on “All” and “Book” you will get a list of over 500 items. Check it out! It is worth your time! Some highlights to look for…
Targeted Authors & Burned Works
There were 58 authors whose books were burned. The most famous among them (at least to me) were: Sigmund Freud, Ernest Hemingway, Helen Keller, Jack London, Karl Marx, Upton Sinclair, Josef Stalin and H.G. Wells. For the complete list and more about the Book Burnings visit the Holocaust Museum exhibit, Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings.
Time Magazine called these events the Bibliocaust (do a Google search on [ bibliocaust “time magazine” ]. You’ll see the “Burning of the Books in Nazi Germany, 1933 The American Response” article in the Simon Wiesenthal Center Multimedia Learning Center.
